Vehicle Length Estimation Using an LTE Transmitter Combined With a Software-Defined Receiver

Unobtrusive determination of an intruding vehicle's length is useful for threat assessments in perimeter surveillance, law enforcement, and antiterrorism applications. We describe a passive radar architecture wherein broadcast signal from cellular mobile communication system radio transmitter bistatically scattered by moving vehicle received processed software-defined platform. Measurement the maximum Doppler frequency target viewing time combined with known geometry measurement scenario permits estimation length. Good agreement observed between actual estimated lengths various types.
